Overview
After the success of our last project, Disco Affections we were asked “What is something you have always wanted to make?”. We were each individually interested in exploring music as we’ve never had the opportunity to throughout University. Thus, a follow-up to our first project together made sense; as our instruction put it we “got the band back together”.
The entirety of Year Four was created in two weeks. We started with the music as we knew that was the most important component and needed to be done first. I was familiar with music production but it was my first time completing a song to this scale, using professional equipment, and fully mixing and mastering the track. We shot the main components of our music video in one day using a green screen, and then we shot the intro one night in the backyard of our student house. Once we had all the pieces, it was a matter of putting them together; editing the video took us three days of on-and-off work. We each had final presentations to deliver on separate days so we took turns individually trimming and compiling the project while consulting with each other on the creative aspects.
We were once again inspired by disco-pop music, but this time around we wanted to showcase a darker, more mature version of ourselves in this universe as we reflected on our experiences and time in University. As demonstrated in the slideshow of our pitch presentation, the colours were darker and we were influenced by black-and-white music videos. Another creative aspect we agreed on was the idea of “cheap but intentionally cheap” as we had no budget to work with but knew if we committed to our “bit” we would both be campy and get people to simultaneously laugh at us and with us; making us “in” on the joke we created about ourselves.
The music video premiered in front of our entire class and our instructor once again had high praise for the amount of effort we put into our projects, solidifying the course as both one of my highest grades ever and one of my favourite courses ever.
